You might know already that I own a flower shop. In the fall, when other flowers are starting to wane, tropical flowers become very available at our local wholesale florist. Since I like to paint what’s available and in season, I picked up a bunch of tropical flowers to paint a series of paintings. I have completely fallen in love with protea. It is a magical otherworldly bloom that seems to have more and more dimension every time I look at it.
This painting is called Flower Power because I see such beauty and power in these tropical flowers. This one has two of the glorious protea, as well as ginger, sunflower, a rose and a few other blooms. I was able to get from my home garden. The electric colors are natural and as powerful as the presence of the flowers themselves.

When I lived in Huntsville, Alabama, I taught a class on painting Still Life , and a few other things at the Huntsville Museum of Art. It was a joy to teach there. So many of the participants in class were around my age, 45 to 55 and we would connect on many levels, including art, growing up in the 80s, our children, etc.
I always painted a demo or two in each class. I would laugh with them that sometimes the demos were great and sometimes they were awful. This one, which I have entitled “Flowers for the Teacher”, was a good one.
I remember it was August, and some of the flowers I had brought with me to use as my model were from my own garden at home. They were starting to die. The oakleaf hydrangea on the right was completely brown. But to me, it hadn’t lost its beauty and the neutral color was perfect to mix in with the vibrant sunflower, black-eyed Susans and roses.

I have been arranging flowers for about 30 years now. I worked in shops and in my own shop. I didn’t realize when I started being a florist, that flowers, and the knowledge of them, would be such an important part of my life in the long term.
When I picked up that fateful paint brush in 2015, the first thing I painted were flowers. And I have just kept on painting them. Flowers bring me joy. And I’ve learned over the years, that they bring a lot of other people joy too.

For a long time I didn’t like painting small works. My painting style is very loose with broad brushstrokes and I had a hard time achieving this on a small surface. One weekend I practically locked myself in the studio until I figured out a way to be happy with painting small.
Small paintings can be very versatile in the way you use them in your home. Obviously, they can be hung on a wall, but they also look great sitting on a mantle or a windowsill. They also make lovely, thoughtful gifts.
Pretty in Pink is just that. It’s a pop of pretty, feminine happiness, because sometimes I like to paint like a girl.

My inspiration for these paintings of little trees came during the Covid lockdown. I had just moved to a new city with a new husband and a new life. I was in a slump and really wasn’t able to get my creativity in gear. The trees outside my studio window, and the glorious sunsets that peeked through their branches gave me the push I needed to get back to the easel. Once I got in a rhythm, I painted more and more of these trees in many different color schemes, sizes and shapes. The fog I was in began to lift once I got my painting groove back, and I have these trees to thank for that.
To me, they represent new beginnings, new life and new love. I hope you love them too.
Clouds may be my favorite thing to paint. I know that may be shocking since most of what I do are flowers. But there’s just something about the infinity of a sky full of clouds. Endless possibilities.
I especially like a sky that has lots of color in it like this one. Of course, the best time to photograph a sky with colors is either first thing in the morning or at sundown. Seeing as how I am not a morning person, most of my skies are evening skies.
This scene is somewhere on the Tennessee back roads late one afternoon.

Like a lot of other people, the colors in the sky at sundown are mesmerizing to me. A colorful sky is also a lot more fun to paint!
This painting is one of many I have done of the stretch of highway between Fayetteville, Tennessee and interstate 65. It is what you might think of as stereo typical Tennessee rolling hills. There are some small farms with horses, cows, hay bales, and slightly worn out fences to hold all the beauty of the land.
We didn’t live in Fayetteville very long and truthfully, I had a hard time moving from my beloved Huntsville to Fayetteville to start with. One thing I did get a lot of joy from was driving these state highways in search of beautiful land that would make for beautiful photographs, which later made beautiful paintings.
